Topographic maps have been critical to the development of Australia. Maps and topographic data continue to be vital resources for governments, industry and the public for a range of professional, emergency management, environmental and recreational uses. Topographic maps depict natural and constructed features of the Earth's surface such as landforms which are represented by contours and spot heights, streams, lakes, dams, roads and tracks, localities, built-up areas, vegetation, conservation, parks, indigenous lands, defence areas and forestry reserves. There are many other features which can be represented on maps and in data. Geoscience Australia's National Mapping Information Group is the Australian Government's national mapping agency and provides topographic maps and data to meet the needs of our developing nation. Digital information, new delivery mechanisms and customised spatial solutions will continue to evolve and as new technologies become available the variety of applications for maps and data will grow. |
