1. New Map to Assist Nickel and Platinum Explorers

Geoscience Australia has released a new 1:4 000 000 scale map — A Synthesis of Australian Proterozoic Mafic-Ultramafic Magmatic Events: Northern Territory and South Australia. This map is the second of a series showing, for the first time, the geographic extent and age relationships of Proterozoic mafic and ultramafic rocks, and associated mineral deposits throughout the Northern Territory and South Australia. The West Australian version of this map was published in October 2006. Nineteen major Proterozoic magmatic events are identified on the new map. Inset maps show the locations of mineral deposits and occurrences; the elevation, aeromagnetic, and gravity structure of the regions; and the distributions of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPS: large volumes of coeval mafic magmatism).

2. New Maps of Proterozoic Gold Mineralising Events

Geoscience Australia has released two new 1:5 000 000 scale colour maps showing Australian Proterozoic Mineralising Events.

Nine major Proterozoic mineralising gold events are identified on the maps. The maps show the mineralising event, based on determined or inferred age, for each deposit, the style of the deposit, and gold occurrences within Proterozoic regions. The maps also include enlargement insets of mineralised areas, time-space-event chart, and pie-charts summarising gold resources by Proterozoic mineralising events. The mineralising events on the first map are superimposed on an Australian Gold Resources (regions classified according to their gold endowment) base, whereas on the second map they are plotted on an Australian Proterozoic Regions base.

3. Update on geophysical data releases

The current status of the geophysical survey data acquisition is available on the Geoscience Australia website in a comprehensive table. The table includes information on pending surveys in the South Kimberley, Tanumbirini, Westmoreland and Charters Towers regions.

5. New Conference Presentations available

Papers given at the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies National Mining Congress held on 7-9 June 2007 in Perth are now available online from the Geoscience Australia website. This includes the New Insights from Key Proterozoic Mineral Provinces presentation given by James Johnson.

Also on line is a paper given at the Paydirt World Diamond Conference held in Perth on 20-21 November 2006.
