Magnetic Map of AustraliaThis colour image is a low resolution version of the continent-scale dataset of Australian magnetics that AGSO has available. It provides the opportunity to review the magnetic anomaly pattern for the whole continent at once, enabling the tectonic structure of Australia to be studied, even in large areas devoid of outcrop. The strength of the magnetic field varies across Australia. The "hotter colours" (eg red) show areas of stronger magnetic field and the "cooler colours" (eg dark blue) show areas of weaker magnetic field. This image is used to assist in the interpretation of the geology of Australia, particularly the major rock assemblages, provinces and structures. The Magnetic Map of Australia images and grids are derived from approximately 9 million line kilometres of airborne geophysical data held in AGSO's National Airborne Geophysical Database. Most of the surveys from which the data come were flown by AGSO using its own aircraft as part of the airborne geophysical reconnaissance of Australia which commenced in 1951. The survey data have been collected at a range of flying heights and line spacings - from mainly 150 m height above the terrain and 1.5 - 3.2 km line spacing for early data, to 60 m - 100 m height above the terrain and 100 m - 400 m line spacing for recently acquired data. The dataset can be ordered from the Geoscience Australia Sales Centre as -
