Web Map Service [WMS]

October 2007 - The location of the National Geoscience Datasets WMS has moved (see National Geoscience Datasets WMS links below). Requests to the old URL will be redirected to the new URL until the end of December 2007. All requests to the National Geoscience Datasets WMS must use the new URL after this period.

What is OGC WMS?

The Open Geospatial Consortium [OGC] developed the Web Mapping Service [WMS] specification to facilitate the interoperability of geospatial data.

A Web Map Service (WMS) produces an image (e.g. PNG, JPG) of geospatial data. The WMS protocol is defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).

OGC WMS gives clients access to an image of our data without having the dataset locally. Using a specially structured http request, they can call a dataset (eg. coastline) into their application (online or from some GIS) through the GA website.
