This Landsat 7, ETM+ (bands 1,2,3) image shows Hinchinbrook Island and part of the Great Barrier Reef, which runs along virtually the entire coast of north Queensland.
Hinchinbrook Island, about 180 km south of Cairns, is a national park visited by those interested in the natural beauty of the island. It is the largest island national park in Australia. It is managed as a wilderness with only a single walking track which follows the eastern shore.
Visitors to Hinchinbrook Island must travel by ferry from Cardwell, the nearest mainland town. Travel to the many other small islands and reefs in the vicinity is by boat (either private or chartered). |
